Photographier les gens / taking pictures from people

Ce n’est pas aisé. Je descends la rue de Belleville, je passe devant les supermarchés chinois, photographie à la volée, sans pour autant me cacher, les étals provisoires. Réactions immédiates des chinois, les gens cachent leur visage de la main. Je marche vers le G20, juste après, là où un groupe de jeunes blacks squatte la rue, surtout le soir. L’appareil est dans ma main. Je ne vais même pas pour prendre une photo, réaction immédiate et légèrement menaçante, du moins très directe. Ou encore, un soir, fête dans la rue Denoyez, public majoritairement blanc, on me demande « t’es pas des RG au moins ? »

En fait, cela me gène de photographier les gens. J’attrape parfois quelqu’un à la volée, mais je n’ai pas particulièrement envie de montrer leur visage si la photographie n’est pas le fruit d’un échange.

Il est évident que dans bien des cas il y a des raisons à ce refus. Certains sont illegaux. Et puis il y a cette pratique du contrôle, des caméras partout, la présence de la police dans le quartier. Les gens ont des raisons d’être suspicieux.

It’s not easy. I’m walking down the Belleville street, in front of the chinese supermarket, i’m visible with my camera, i’m taking pictures, without really stopping my walk, from the non permanent stalls. Immediate reactions, chinese people are putting their hand in front of their face. I’m walking in the street just after the G20, where a group of young black guys is squatting the street, especially in the evening. The photo camera is in my hand. I’m even not going to take a picture, but immediate reaction, a bit agressive, very direct. Or, one evening in the street, a party, the audience is mainly white, someone is asking :  » you are not member of the RG, I hope ? » (RG is the information service of the police).

In fact, it’s a bit problematic for me to take pictures from people. Sometimes someone is appearing by chance on a picture but i don’t particularly want to show their face if the photography is not the result of an exchange.

I’ts an evidence that in many cases people have reasons to refuse to be taken in photo. Some are unlegal. And there is this practice of control, cameras everywhere, the presence of the police in the area… People are suspicious.
